The vast majority of Mexico's 500,000 coffee producers are smallholder farmers and have one hectare or less of land under coffee. Union San Pedro represents around 180 coffee producing families.
Coffee leaf rust disease and lack of financial means to tackle the problem has reduced production by up to 90% over the last 10 years. Raw Material Coffee has set up a partnership with Union San Pedro to guarantee a new baseline for coffee pricing, and a pre-financing programme to help smallholder farmers boost their average income per kg by 7 to 10 times for high grade coffee, compared to local market prices.
This coffee is a mix of two varieties that are typical to the Sierra Sur: Mundo Novo and Pluma Hidalgo. Pluma Hidalgo is a variant of the Typica variety and was developed in the Sierra Sur, in the town of Pluma Hidalgo just a few miles from San Pedro.
